Youth Opportunities Program
SCYAP is committed to helping ensure that youth on the cusp of becoming adults are prepared to become self-sustaining, productive, and contributing members of their communities. Through a combination of case coordination, service intervention, participation in a structured and individualized curriculum, and direct support services, SCYAP’s Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) provides such an opportunity to youth, ages 16-21.
The overall goal of YOP is to provide youth with the skills and resources they need to become self-reliant and self-confident individuals, who can positively contribute to their community. In order to achieve this goal, the program focuses on 6 domains with specific objectives for each of the domains:
Youth complete or are involved in an educational program (high school, technical school, college/university, GED, adult education, etc.).
Youth are employed or engaged in a job-training program (vocational training, volunteer work, internship, competitive employment, etc.).
Youth have a stable living arrangement (apartment, family, dormitory, house, etc.).
Community Resource Linkage Domain
Youth have knowledge of and access to community resources (medical, social services, financial institutions, mental health, public works, etc.).
Basic Life Skill Acquisition Domain
Youth have adequate life skills in basic independent living areas (food management, budgeting, job seeking skills, legal issues, health and hygiene, etc.).
Youth have an identified primary physician and receive routine medical services for dental and other health needs (i.e., vision, hearing, mental health, etc.).
A combination of assessment, skill building activities, and hands-on community activities are used in the program to achieve the goals. Progress and milestones are measured through a variety of methods, including (but not limited to):
Implementation of a Life Skills Inventory to measure functional skill development and attainment in the following areas: Money Management/Consumer Awareness, Food Management, Personal Appearance, Health and Hygiene, Housekeeping and Personal Belongings, Housing, Transportation, Educational Planning, Job Seeking Skills, Emergency Skills, Responsible Drug Use, Sexuality, Interpersonal Skills, Community Involvement/Knowledge of Resources and Legal Issues.
Progress evaluations to assess the YOP participant’s successes and status with education, vocation, housing arrangements, functional skill development, healthcare, and community linkage.
Development of a Resource Manual that includes information on community resources and important personal information, individualized to each youth.
