SC YOUTH ADVOCATE PROGRAM

Make an Online Donation

When you donate to SC Youth Advocate Program, you help to make a difference. When children come into the care of SCYAP, they have a wide variety of needs. SCYAP has developed several initiatives to help meet some of these needs that are not covered by either federal or state funding. Without the generosity of donors, like you, these opportunities would not be possible.

If you would like to donate to the SC Youth Advocate Program to help us care for our special children in foster care, we would appreciate any help you can provide.

Your Donation Helps These Programs

General Donation

It can be difficult to anticipate the needs of all of the children that we serve. When they come into the care of SCYAP, these children and youth have a wide variety of needs. A general donation can be used to help meet these individualized needs. For example, some children come to us with no clothing. We can use donated funds to help make sure they at least have pajamas and a change of clothing for school. We have also used general donations in the past to help purchase specialized items. Some of our children need customized car seats, strollers, cribs, and other equipment because of medical conditions. General donations have also allowed us to help purchase school uniforms for children who need to go to a special school to help with their medical or mental health issues. These are just some of the examples of the many ways a general donation can help SCYAP care for our special foster children.

Summer Camp & Recreation

The generosity of donors has allowed our foster children to participate in a variety of summer camps and recreational activities over the years. The benefits of this program are numerous. They range from physical, artistic and mental development to emotional and social development. Summer camps emphasize good health, problem-solving skills, teamwork and learning to get along well with other young people and adults. Summer activities allow our foster children to develop a sense of belonging, learning, cooperating and contributing within a relaxed and supportive environment. For many of them, this is the first time they have had the opportunity to participate in such an activity. The generosity of our donors has made it possible for them to take part in a wide variety of activities over the years.

Artistic & Cultural Expression (ACE)

ACE was developed to help our children work through some of the traumas that have befallen them in their young lives. It can be hard for children to verbalize the experiences and neglect that they have experienced, but through a variety of arts programs they can sometimes work through these issues in a way that is culturally acceptable. Through this program we have had children participate in drawing and painting lessons, dance classes, theater, writing, and some have learned to play musical instruments. What we have learned through this program is that not only does it help the children work through their individualized issues, but it has also helped them develop discipline and appreciation for the arts. Many have discovered talents they didn’t even know they had and have gone on to excel in their chosen artistic forum.

Back to School Basics

The back to school supply lists from schools have become quite extensive. SCYAP tries to help our children as they are returning to school in the fall by ensuring they have appropriate school supplies. We strive to have available a new backpack, package of notebook paper, composition books, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks, calculators, etc. The supplies are distributed based on the age and grade of the child.

Christmas

The holidays are such a special time of the year and we want to make sure that our children are not forgotten during the Christmas season. Our goal at SCYAP is to make sure that each of our children receives at least one item off their wish list. We have a program where individuals and businesses can sponsor, or “adopt”, a child for Christmas and take his or her wish list and purchase items for them. If it is easier, donors may also make cash donations for the holidays and our employees will do the shopping for them.

Precious Cargo

This program was developed because so many of our children come to us with few belongings of their own. Precious Cargo allows us to have a duffle bag available to give to each child that comes into our care. The bags are filled with basic hygiene items, school supplies, a stuffed animal and a blanket. The bags are prepared based on three age group categories: birth- 2 years; 3-11 years; 12 years and up.
