Every May, National Foster Care Month reminds us of the more than 380,000 children and youth currently in foster care across the United States. It’s a time to raise awareness, honor foster parents and advocates, and reflect on the needs and hopes of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or family crisis.
But while May serves as an important spotlight, the truth is: Every day is the right day to speak up for children in foster care.
Why Children in Foster Care Need Our Voices
Children enter foster care through no fault of their own. They are often removed from their homes because of unsafe environments and placed into the care of foster families or relatives. The trauma of separation, uncertainty, and past abuse can weigh heavily on their emotional and mental well-being.
These children need more than just a temporary home – they need advocates. People who will show up, speak up, and stand up for their best interests. Whether you’re a foster parent, teacher, coach, neighbor, or simply someone who cares, your voice and support can have a powerful impact.
Speaking Up Takes Many Forms
Speaking up doesn’t always mean stepping into the foster care system directly. Here are some powerful ways to support foster children:
- Become a foster parent and provide a safe, loving home.
- Share information about the need for foster families on social media.
- Volunteer with organizations that support youth in care.
- Advocate for policies that improve child welfare services.
- Donate to nonprofits that provide resources to children and families in foster care.
- Encourage and uplift foster parents and social workers in your community.
The Role of Foster Parents
Foster parents are everyday heroes. They open their homes and hearts to children in need, provide stability in times of chaos, and help young people heal and grow. Their commitment can change the entire direction of a child’s life.
At the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program (SCYAP), we are grateful for every foster parent who steps up to meet this urgent need. And we are always here to help guide others through the process of becoming a foster parent or advocate.
A Year-Round Commitment
While National Foster Care Month is a perfect opportunity to get involved, the needs of children in care continue long after May ends. Let this month be your motivation, but not your limit.
Every child deserves a voice. Every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported. Every day is the right time to care.
